It's finally completed...well almost. I started building Evan's changing table before he was born, but because of his early arrival, I didn't quite get it finished in time. I have tried to find time here and there to work on it, and now, several months later, I am almost done. The only thing that I have left to do is put a few pieces on top to hold the changing mattress.
As you can see, we decided to go with a distressed green finish. The color is actually "heath green." I was a little nervous about the distressing, but we are very pleased with how it turned out.
This is the Pottery Barn changing table that I used as a model for my own. I followed the pattern pretty closely, but we wanted to be able to take the changing part off the top and have it be a regular dresser as well, and of course, we wanted to try the distressed look. I think we will also go with some antique-looking hardware instead of the painted wooden knobs to keep with the distressed look.
A little closer look. I think next time I might try a little less distressing, but once you get going, it's hard to stop.
The "E" on top was painted by Patrice. Also, she picked out the lamp base and shade. The lamp shade has construction equipment on it that you can see when it is turned on.
Next up...crib.

Wow! That's all I can say. Wow! Wow! Wow! I'm impressed and just wonder if I can order a piece of furniture? Lucky Evan. I don't think it's too much distress. It looks really good. I would love to see the little lamp turned on and love the E - Patrice! Again - wow!
Looks great, Al.
Allen or is it Norm?!
I like your changing table better than the Pottey Barn model. Do you have a full shop in your garage? I never realized what a handy man you are. I refinished some furniture and thought that was the harest thing ever I can't imagine building the furniture. I am very impressed.
Ok I have a solution for you guys. Allen you should quit your job stay home and tend Evan and while he naps you can build custom furniture. Then Patrice can work and when she comes home you can go to work full time on the furniture. Here is your first order. One dresser, much like the one you just made Evan. I will go get the exact measurements. Then a set of bookshelves. And an entertainment center. Again I will get you a picture of what I want but I LOVE the green and would like them all distressed as well. If I place the order today could I have them by Christmas? I am in LOVE with the changing table especially since the last time I saw it, it was bare wood. Good job on the accesories Patrice. Maybe you should quit your job and the two of you could open a home furnishing business together? TALENT!!!
Wow, that changing table must be impressive to get a comment from Rick. Yes, it was short but he NEVER comments on blogs! I for one am also way impressed. It looks wonderful. I am sure that the crib will also turn out amazing. I just hope that Evan gets it a little sooner than Luke got his. Luke got his just in time for Noah to use it!
Uh-mazing! Allen, that seriously looks so great. It kicks the butt of the pottery barn one, and it definitely doesn't look too distressed. I love the idea of the hardware you want to put on it, too, and I'm also wondering if once you finish the crib if you'll be taking custom orders?
I know a few guys that can build you a crib...
That looks so wonderful! I was thinking the same thing as Billie Jo, just start making furniture at home and all your problems are solved! Evan is a lucky little guy!
For real Allen, you should seriously start a side job and make more furniture. You do such amazing work! If you do start taking orders, I will definitely be on the list!
Addison told me not to look at your blog, and now I see it is because it is making him look bad. Can you come build me a changing table?? Patrice is so lucky...do you remind her of that often??? Because I have to admit I am a quite jealous.
This is where you have to have patrice do your blogging. Then it doesn't come off as bragging. J/k Dude you do got some talent though. Don't forget on all your next projects to watch your thumbs. It sucks having a deformed one your whole life. If you play fantasy football like you build furniture we are in for a treat.
Why the heck did you go to Law School... You could have saved yourself years of Student Loans by just starting a furniture business. I am very impressed. Patrice must be very patient because I would have just bought the stupid Pottery Barn one the minute I knew the kids was coming. Very Impressive... The only thing that would have made this post better is if you would have thrown a picture of Evan in there....
Allen, great job! I knew it would get done, and it looks beautiful! I do like it better than the pb one and I know it's much better built!
Sue
That is amazing. I can see that you have a long line of orders but seriously- how much do you charge? I need something to go under our big screen and I can't find what I'm looking for in the stores. Maybe you could just give Joel a crash course and he could try it? Anyway, it's amazing and I'm very impressed!
It turned out great. Too bad that I will probably never get to see it in person since your refuse to move by us.
I love your version better than the pottery barn version. In fact, I need some cabinets just in that same style for my Laundry room. Do you want to fly out here and make them??
Yours looks better than the Pottery Barn one! Since you hadn't updated in so long I didn't know all these pics of Even were up! He is so adorable. I can't WAIT until you guys come to N. Utah. Hey you know where a great place to live is? Cache Valley. I'm just sayin...
p.s. thanks for your comment on my blog, Patrice. It made me feel good (:
UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE! (you have to imagine that I'm changing this while simultaneously slamming fists down)... I know you have exciting news for all of us, plus when I saw a pic of Evan on Mom's blog I almost couldn't recognize him! Come on, please???? For those of us who didn't see you last weekend???
